Located at 3224 Yoakum Blvd, just south of Westheimer, Houston Buyers Club was founded in 1994 by Fred Walters to improve the quality of life for people with health-related conditions through nutritional education and affordable nutritional supplements. Houston Buyers Club is a project of the Program For Side Effects Management a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.
The Buyers Club sells items including vitamins and minerals, protein supplements, amino acids, creatine, antioxidants, digestive enzymes, liver detoxifiers, fatty acids, herbs and hormone boosters. Many of the supplements are aimed at cutting down the side effects of drugs to reduce the number of patients who skip or stop taking their medications because of the side effects, which can anemia, appetite loss and bloating gas, elevated cholesterol, high triglycerides and diarrhea.
The Buyers Club serves patients with HIV/AIDS, cancer, hepatitis C, diabetes, and increasingly, those with few health problems who still enjoy the low cost and wide selection of supplements. They only mark up their products 5 to 22 percent, a much lower increase than most stores. Taking advantage of the good deals, even without an chronic health problems, helps support the store for their patients with chronic illness and the programs they run.
The Buyers Club also has a registered dietician specializing in HIV/AIDS on staff to assist patients develop healthier eating habits tailored to address the patient’s particular health needs and side effects. The dietician also teaches patients how to better read nutritional labels and how to incorporate meals out into one’s dietary goals. Grocery store tours and in-home cooking classes are also available.
In order to serve the community at large, The Buyers Club also offers educational workshops on nutrition, supplements, and general healthcare education.
They also have become the place to go for information and advice on HIV nutritional treatment and side effects, with doctors and AIDS organizations asking for their research results every day.
